In Mongolia, February 28 is observed each year as Gobi Bear Conservation Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The population of the mazaalai\u2014the iconic inhabitant of the Gobi and one of the world\u2019s rarest bears\u2014was estimated at around 20 in the early 2000s, 25\u201330 in 2010, more than 30 since 2020, and approximately 40\u201350 according to the latest assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mazaalai is a symbol of Mongolia\u2019s biodiversity and a source of national pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scientifically classified as Ursus arctos gobiensis<\/em>, the mazaalai is a Gobi subspecies of the brown bear. It inhabits Area A of the Great Gobi Strictly Protected Area<\/strong> in southern Mongolia and is one of the few mammal species adapted to one of the driest and most extreme climatic regions in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compared with other brown bears, the mazaalai is slightly smaller, has lighter brown fur, long claws, and broad paws. Its diet consists mainly of plant-based food, although it also eats insects, small animals, and carrion. Because water is scarce in the Gobi, mazaalai bears are often found near oases, springs, and other water sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, the mazaalai population has remained critically low. Climate change, the increasing frequency of droughts and severe winters, the drying up of water sources, and the impact of human activities are reducing its natural habitat. Therefore, protecting the mazaalai is not merely about saving a single animal species; it is inseparably linked to protecting the entire fragile ecosystem of the Gobi and desert regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
